Strolling around the only town in Belgium which still has an intact medieval wall. The Gilles get up before dawn on mardi gras, have breakfast of oysters and champagne and then stuff their costumes with straw, don seamless socks and clogs and a mask, to make everybody look alike or for an erudite appearance, not sure. Then with much noise and movement make their way to the Mayor for a medal. They use their little brooms to brush away all the bad things of the previous year. In the afternoon, the ostrich plume headdresses are added (we missed this one) and oranges are thrown at the crowd and I suppose the party begins in earnest! A Unesco protected activity along with carnival in Aalst, but other than the Carnival in Aalst, the Binchois weren’t in trouble for dressing up as Nazis. Not cool for anyone, not even a prince, anywhere, anytime….
